Black History Month

Who
started Black History Month?

During the dawning of the
twentieth century, it was widely presumed that people of African descent had
little history besides the subjugation of slavery. Credit for the evolving
awareness of the true place of Blacks in history can, in large part, be bestowed
upon Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950).

Woodson founded the Association
for the Study of African American Life and History in 1915, which was then the
Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, and in 1916 the Journal of
Negro History, now the Journal of African American History.

The 2025 theme is 'African Americans and Labor'.  The theme was designed to highlight the role of work in the Black American experience.

When we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize, honor, and acknowledge the contributions and achievements of African Americans.
